True Story: The lawyer and the legal agreement
Having entered into a new relationship and just purchased a new house, our client needed a few legal agreements - not the least of which was a relationship property agreement. The lawyer, however, was indignant when we questioned how the legal agreement had been structured. After all, she’d gone to university, trained to be a lawyer and practiced for many years. How dare we question her!
We pushed through her quite substantial outrage and eventually got her to see what we were talking about. Oh dear. Yes, she’d got it wrong (although she didn’t exactly say so).
All the documentation had to be redrawn and re-executed. Did she apologise? Don’t be silly. That was, I think, beneath her lofty status!
It sometimes pays to question your professional advisor. Don’t feel intimidated by them. They do make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to keep going until you’re sure it’s right.
There’s more on this topic (and two more true stories) in our July newsletter “9 ways to get the best out of your professional advisor”.
